Appreciated for being “a born soloist” with "complete fluency in all registers, well-controlled technique and beautiful tone" (Toronto Star), Canadian flutist Susan Hoeppner is in great demand as an international solo recitalist and chamber musician. Appearances include prestigious venues spanning the continents of North America, South America, Europe, and Asia.
Susan Hoeppner is a musician of international renown. She has performed as a guest soloist with orchestras around the world, including the New York Chamber Orchestra, Takefu International Festival Orchestra in Japan, Lisbon Radio Orchestra, Orquesta de Camera in Buenos Aires, Northern Lights Music Festival Orchestra in Mexico, and the Sacramento Symphony. In Canada, she has performed with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Calgary Philharmonic, Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony, Canadian Chamber Ensemble, Regina Symphony Orchestra and the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, among others.
A true musical ambassador, Susan Hoeppner has performed at the Canadian Embassy in Mexico City every year since 2009, and is invited for a return performance in 2011. She has given concerts at the Canadian Embassies in London, New York, and the Embassy opening in Tokyo. In August of 2011, Ms. Hoeppner has been invited to perform at the Japan Flute Convention in Kyoto, and will appear in recital and chamber performances as well as give masterclasses.
Among Canada’s top artists Ms. Hoeppner has collaborated with in performance and recording include harpist Judy Loman, violist Steven Dann, clarinetist Joaquin Valdepenas, cellist Amanda Forsyth, percussionist Beverly Johnston, and pianist Lydia Wong,. She has performed with other Canadian and international artists, including pianists Anton Kuerti, Marc-André Hamelin, and Robert Kortgaard; opera singers Renée Fleming, Measha Brueggergosman, Ben Heppner, and Richard Margison; and harpist Erica Goodman. Ms. Hoeppner is in demand as a recording artist as well. Her numerous discs appear on Marquis Classics, EMI Classics, Grammophon AB BIS, JVC Victor and King Record labels.
One recent project of interest was participating in fashion designer Rosemarie Umetsu’s 2010 “Iconic Beauty”, founded in 2008. This is a photographic celebration of the individual style and art of the Canadian Female Artist through the medium of fashion photography, shot by Tara McMullen. She has also been invited by the well-known music publisher Frederick Harris Music Company to serve as its Canadian representative to launch a new teaching series called "Overtones – A Comprehensive Flute Series" at the National Flute Association (NFA) in California in August 2010. Past projects include Luminato Festival of Arts and Creativity in June of 2007; the opening gala at the Design Exchange celebrated 1,000 Toronto women who contribute to the artistic community. Susan Hoeppner maintains an active media presence. She can be frequently heard on Canada's national broadcaster, on CBC Radio 2 and on live broadcasts on Bravo! Television.
A graduate of The Juilliard School in New York, where she studied with Julius Baker, Ms. Hoeppner is now a member of the University of Toronto's Faculty of Music where, along with regular recital appearances, she teaches a class on performance. An active teacher of gifted private advanced students, Ms. Hoeppner was appointed to the faculty of the Royal Conservatory’s Glenn Gould School, as of the fall of 2010. Every summer, Ms. Hoeppner teaches at Domaine Forget in Charlevoix, Quebec as well as The Julius Baker Masterclass in New York. As a Canadian Yamaha Artist, she performs and travels extensively throughout North America giving masterclasses in universities and high schools.
Early in her career Ms. Hoeppner was the Grand Prize Winner of the Canadian Music Competition, the first woodwind player ever to receive this honour in the competition's history. At 20 years of age she gave her New York debut at Town Hall, and went on to perform at the world-renowned Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, both to critical acclaim.
Ms. Hoeppner, "Sue" to her friends, enjoys swimming, power-walking, shoe-shopping, cooking, designing candles, and is a devoted animal lover. She enjoys learning foreign languages, such as Japanese, French, and Spanish. She also puts her organisational skills to use by helping friends sort their closets and homes.
